Why Mammograms Are So Effective

Early detection is one of the most powerful tools in the fight against breast cancer. Mammograms are the gold standard for screening, helping detect breast changes before symptoms appear, when treatment is most effective.

Why mammograms are so effective:

  • Detect cancer early: Mammograms can find tumors too small to feel. Early detection often means less aggressive treatment and better outcomes.

  • Reduce mortality risk: Studies show that regular mammograms can reduce breast cancer deaths by 20–40% among women over 40.

  • Track changes over time: Routine screenings allow doctors to compare images year over year, spotting even subtle changes.

  • Safe and quick: Modern mammograms are low-dose X-rays, usually taking less than 15 minutes.

Who should get screened:

  • Most women are advised to start annual mammograms at age 40. A base line mammogram is recommended at age 35 so that there is one for the radiologist to compare to starting at age 40.

  • Women with higher risk—family history, genetic mutations, or dense breast tissue—may need earlier or more frequent screenings.

  • Women in their 20s and 30s should do a monthly self-breast exam to watch for changes. It's important to know your body and report any changes to your physician.

💡 Tip: Schedule your mammogram at the same time each year—it’s a simple step that can make a big difference.
